My name is Janelle Giordano. I graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas on May 20, 2017 with a major in Journalism and minor in Sport Management. I currently work as a Consulting Writer at PartnerComm, Inc. in Dallas.
As a senior at SMU, I worked as the Co-Managing Editor of The Daily Update, SMU-TV’s daily news show. I actively researched, assigned and managed news stories for 25 reporters. I maintained effective communication with other editors to circulate all news content in a timely manner. In 2016, I hosted the weekly sports segment, “Sports Spotlight.” I produced content, shot and edited footage every week.
In 2016, I also worked as the Assignments Editor of The Daily Campus, SMU’s student newspaper. I approved, revised and published stories for 30 reporters. I worked closely with the Editor-in-Chief to ensure proper circulation of online stories. Before my promotion to Assignments Editor, I worked as a staff writer for the newspaper in 2015. I researched the latest news around campus and wrote spot news, breaking news and features stories. My involvement in SMU Student Media has equipped me with strong verbal and written communication skills.
While studying at SMU, I competed on the women’s volleyball team for four years on a full athletic scholarship. As a student-athlete, I gained excellent organizational and time-management skills. The continuous travel, competition and class work taught me to prioritize my responsibilities. I learned to successfully manage multiple duties on the court and in the classroom. My role as a leader on the team taught me to work well with others, while the pressure on the court taught me to perform in demanding situations. I also served as a representative on the SMU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, creating clear lines of communication between my team and the athletic department.
